Jefferson Airplane-Surrealistic Pillow-45th anniversary pt2

(cont)…If one were to attempt to carve three dimensionally the zeigeist of the Summer of Love, you would have to chisel the Jefferson Airplane‘s 1967 second album Surrealistic Pillow into any Mt. Rushmore of Rock containing those other three classics. While The Doors and Sgt.Pepper’s… showed us where rock was heading, and Are You Experienced seemed positively from some future dimension, Surrealistic Pillow has LSD-inspired songs and sounds unapologetically butted up next to vocal singalongs clearly influenced by the hit hootenany pop style of the Mamas and the Papas. It is that anachronistic Jekyll-and-Hyde crazy quilt that makes Surrealistic Pillow more representative a snapshot, possibly, than any recording of its time. Part two of three with Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Grace Slick. – Redbeard
