Normally we start out each edition of In The Studio with a musical collage made up of the most popular musical highlights from a band or musician’s career, but in Todd Rundgren‘s instance the high points from merely one of his solo albums, Something/ Anything, would run three minutes long. So now that Rundgren has released Global, his twenty-fifth studio album in a long legendary career, simply do the math and it becomes readily apparent that a proper musical tribute would pretty much take up the whole hour!
Go ahead and pick any period in the last forty-five years of rock music and Todd Rundgren has been there, and in multiple roles too, as a solo artist, the bandleader of one of America’s finest foursomes, Utopia, and as a record producer of many successful, diverse, and acclaimed albums by Badfinger Straight Up, The Band Stage Fright, Grand Funk We’re an American Band, Meatloaf‘s worldwide phenomenon Bat Out of Hell, The Psychedelic Furs‘ breakthrough “Love My Way”, and XTC’s Skylarking, just for starters.
When rock music fans compare notes each year of the shortlist of overdue inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Todd Rundgren’s name may not yet make every list, possibly overshadowed by other deserving but much larger full bands, but maybe that won’t be the case much longer. After listening to my chat here about his earliest career( his first solo album Runt marks its 45th anniversary in June ) maybe you will agree that Todd Rundgren did more in and for rock before the age of twenty-five, in more ways, than any other musician I can think of. –Redbeard
