Drumming superstar and In the Studio roving musical ambassador Kenny Aronoff ( John Fogerty, Chickenfoot, Smashing Pumpkins, John Mellencamp) got some quality face time grinning broadly while performing with Ringo Starr during their performance of “Photograph” on the Grammy Awards telecast. “The Aronizer” must have slipped the director a benjamin to give the drummer some. Ringo had quite the all-starr band with Peter Frampton and Toto’s Steve Lukather on acoustic guitars and backing vocals plus Don Was on bass. Here is Kenny backstage on the right with ( l ) legendary drummer Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan, George Harrison, John Lennon, Joe Cocker ). But it’s a safe bet that without the little smiling guy “Richie” in the center, performing for the first time in America fifty years ago on the Ed Sullivan television show, neither Kenny Aronoff’s nor Jim Keltner’s lives would ever be the same. And neither would yours or mine, for that matter.
Ringo Starr bumped Kenny off of the drummer stool and joined Paul McCartney‘s band performing a new Macca song “Queenie Eye” with the catchy refrain “…without a shadow of a doubt” during the Grammy telecast, while McCartney’s latest release entitled “New” was heard as the soundtrack to the Microsoft Windows tv ad. Oh, speaking of the tv ads, the retail giant Target has had some particularly tough months lately, but they sure made a great choice in advertising agencies, as their series spotlighting upcoming music releases was quite impressive. Now I want a red metallic lacquer microphone, too. And who did Coldwell Banker Real Estate choose for the theme music for their tv ad campaign touting “home sweet home”? Why, Motley Crue of course! –Redbeard
