The US mainstream had dabbled with Latin music by way of Harry Belafonte, Astrud Gilberto “Girl from Ipanema”, Trini Lopez, Jose Feliciano, and the soundtrack to “West Side Story”, but notably only one at a time. Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, Michael Shrieve and Santana changed all that in Fall 1970 with “Abraxas”, incorporating World Music long before the term was even coined.
