Genesis- We Can’t Dance 35th- Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Phil Collins 11-9
Although in November 1991 we had no way of knowing it, We Can’t Dance by Genesis turned out to be the final album of new music by Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Phil Collins as Genesis. The Progressive Rock stalwarts’ fourteenth album (!), We Can’t Dance was also Genesis’s fifth consecutive #1 seller in their native UK, #4 in the US. Over 4,000,000 copies of We Can’t Dance were sold in America alone, and the band filled their dance cards with stadium shows across Europe and North America for six months in 1991.
My guests here In the Studio break out the stories of the flip side of the Prodigal Son parable on “No Son of Mine”, the Nineties TV evangelist send-up “Jesus He Knows Me”, the historical epic “Driving the Last Spike”, the gripping guilt-ridden hit-and-run confessional “Dreaming While You Sleep”, the socially aware “Tell Me Why”, the sleeper shuffle “Way of the World”, and the quasi-title song “I Can’t Dance”. Don’t miss the guys in Genesis Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Phil Collins for my classic rock interview marking the Genesis swan song We Can’t Dance next week of November 9. – Redbeard
