Crowded House- It’s Only Natural- Los Angeles July 2010

Ten years ago “It’s Only Natural” that Aussie all-stars Crowded House would want to celebrate. It was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the brilliantly eclectic, melodic quartet and they had a new studio album, Intriguer,  dropping as well, so they embarked on a world tour.

That Crowded House 2010 album Intriguer   went straight to the #1 selling spot in Australia, which probably comes as no surprise to anyone with even a basic knowledge of the band’s long career from the Finn Brothers Neil and Tim’s beginnings with Split Enz in New Zealand. But that chauvinism doesn’t explain away Intriguer‘s  #12 sales in the UK that year.

It was bittersweet for us rabid Crowded Housers when, in 2018, Neil Finn was tapped to join Fleetwood Mac to sing and write songs in the absence of Lindsey Buckingham. We were all thrilled of the validation the invitation afforded Neil as one of the finest pop songwriters this side of Paul McCartney;  the forum for his talents and the payday fronting the Big Mac that the opportunity presents. But we also knew inherently the threat  to Crowded House it presented, so I for one am thrilled to learn that Finn, Nick Seymour, and Mitchell Froom are working on the next Crowded House album! –Redbeard

Crowded House- Don’t Dream It’s Over/All I Have to Do is Dream- 2010

Hey now, hey now…“. What a great band. Formed from the stray strands of New Zealand’s Split Enz, Crowded House had up to four lead singers and the brilliant songs of Neil Finn. Not even the almost criminally inept career direction of their management and US promoters could totally sabotage this level of talent, and the people that did somehow hear and see them cannot praise them enough. You’ll hear it from this live medley in the US in 2010 where they marry their 1985 hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over” with the Everly Brothers‘ chestnut. –Redbeard

Crowded House- I Got You- America 2010

This song “I Got You” was done in 1980 by New Zealand band Split Enz, who started their career by dressing in such bizarre  garish make-up that would make KISS look like Lady Gaga. Split Enz was led by Tim Finn and younger brother Neil, who went on to Australia and eventually Los Angeles as Crowded House. Here is Crowded House ( sans Tim, who has some health issues ) during their 2010 North American tour reprising ” I Got You”.  –Redbeard

Crowded House- World Where You Live- San Francisco 4-87

Having never had the opportunity to see the Beatles play live, seeing Crowded House several times, including a private sunset performance on the banks of White Rock Lake in Dallas, is the closest I’ll probably ever get to progressive pop nirvana. Four lead singers and the songwriting of the brilliant Neil Finn. One hundred thousand people showed up at their farewell concert in Sydney, while in the US they couldn’t get arrested.  Their handlers could screw up a two-car funeral. Thanks to mi amigo Big Dave Logan and KFOG for rolling tape at Wolfgang’s, remastered 2013 by Redbeard. And since Neil Finn has been tapped to replace Lindsey Buckingham‘s vocals on the upcoming Fleetwood Mac tour, we suggest you check out Neil Finn’s most recent solo album Out of Silence . – Redbeard
