Jo Jo Gunne 50th Anniversary- Jay Ferguson

When artist manager-turned-media mogul David Geffen started his first Los Angeles-based record label Asylum Records, his first signing was Jackson Browne and his third deal was with the Eagles. Who was Geffen's second signing? Hometown heroes Jo Jo Gunne. marking the golden anniversary of that first ( and in songwriting, their best ) 1972 album Jo Jo Gunne, singer/songwrite/pianist Jay Ferguson reveals all kinds of influences when he told me, "If Sly and the Family Stone and Little Feat had a love child, it would have been Jo Jo Gunne!" Here In the Studio Jay tells the innocent tale of "Run Run Run","Shake That Fat","Babylon"," 99 Days","Barstow Blue Eyes", and"Take It Easy".

David Bowie- Hunky Dory- David Bowie, Mick Ronson

"Hunky Dory", David Bowie's December 1971 fourth album, hard to believe when reading all of the revisionist raves now, that "Hunky Dory"  was a commercial flop, so much so that it failed to even make the Billboard Top 200 sales chart. The late great David Bowie joined me here In the Studio  for the tale, as did his original wingman, guitarist Mick Ronson, for the scoop on "Changes","Andy Warhol", and "Life on Mars?"

Alice Cooper- Love It to Death- Killer

"Love It to Death" in March 1971 may have been the the third album by the band Alice Cooper, but that doesn't change the fact that nobody bought the first two. By December of that same year, EVERYBODY had heard "I'm Eighteen" off of Love It to Death ,  and Alice Cooper had written and recorded a soon-to-be-classic additional full album, Killer .And it was

Faces- A Nod is as Good as a Wink- Rod Stewart, Ron Wood

Those first two Faces albums were critical faves but received scant U.S. airplay, but that all changed in a hurry in November 1971 with "A Nod is As Good As a Wink" containing the international hit "Stay With Me". Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, & archival comments from the late  Ian McLagan ( Ronnie Lane passed as well ) face the music In the Studio for their most popular album, "A Nod is as Good as a Wink" .

Todd Rundgren- Black Mariah- Ridgefield CT 2015

Todd Rundgren performed a stunning version of "Black Mariah", one of my all-time TR faves (originally found "when the kid gets heavy..." on Something/ Anything?  almost fifty years ago ) when he played Ridgefield CT back in 2015, and this high…

Van Morrison- Tupelo Honey

the timeless Van Morrison warm musical blanket, "Tupelo Honey" . This ultra-rare, fascinating interview with the reclusive "Howard Hughes of Rhythm 'n' Blues" is nothing short of a revelation...

Peter Frampton- All I Want to Be is By Your Side- Dallas 2-94

Working without a net, unrehearsed and totally imprompt, surrounded by wall-to-wall fans crammed like sardines into a Dallas bar/restaurant in February 1994 for my Friday afternoon remote broadcast on Q-102 ,Peter Frampton obliged his loyal fans with the appropriate "All I Want to Be is By Your Side" which I first played back in 1972 on my first radio station in Findlay , Ohio . -Redbeard

Progressive Rock’s 1972 Peak

For Christmas 1971, my 11 year old brother received a present from me of a record album. While on the surface this would appear not the least remarkable … except that it was Meddle   by Pink Floyd, containing the 18 minute long opus  “Echoes”.…
