The patriarch of Southern Rock, Charlie Daniels, has passed away at age 83.

“Give the Devil his due…” sang the big guy in the big hat long ago, but that was just in jest, as it was no secret that the gentle giant claimed the Lord Jesus Christ as his saviour. Charlie Daniels told me that he had just finished writing “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” before he and the Charlie Daniels Band performed it at their annual Volunteer Jam in Nashville on January 13, 1979, making this performance the first ever before a live audience. –Redbeard
